The Guides — Maldives
The best luxury resorts in the Maldives.
A private advisor's selection — eight private islands and overwater residences we book repeatedly, with preferred-partner rates, upgrades and amenities reserved for our clients.
Why this list
Not a ranking. A working shortlist.
There are more than 160 resorts in the Maldives. Most are very good. A few are exceptional, and a handful are quietly without equal. The shortlist below is the one we actually use for clients — vetted in person, booked repeatedly, and held to a single standard: would we send our own family there.
Every property here is part of our preferred-partner network. That typically means upgrades at check-in, daily breakfast, a resort credit between $100 and $300, early check-in and late check-out when the island allows it — at the published room rate.
Noonu Atoll
Soneva Jani
Overwater villas with retractable roofs and private waterslides.
Barefoot-luxury benchmark. Private outdoor cinema, an observatory and one of the most generous villa footprints in the country.
Best for — Families who want space and theatre — and adults who'd rather sleep under the stars than under a roof.
Noonu Atoll
Cheval Blanc Randheli
An LVMH private-island house — five-villa residences and Guerlain spa.
The most discreet European service in the Maldives. Quietly the favourite of families used to Courchevel and St-Barth.
Best for — Guests who travel with staff, security or extended family and want a residence, not a resort.
Baa Atoll (UNESCO Biosphere)
Four Seasons Private Island Voavah
A buy-out private island for one family — seven bedrooms, dive centre, 62-ft yacht.
The only true single-family island of this calibre. Comes with its own staff, chef, dive instructor and yacht skipper.
Best for — Multi-generational groups, milestone birthdays and family-office gatherings that want complete privacy.
North Malé Atoll
One&Only Reethi Rah
Twelve beaches on a single island — the largest villa footprint in the Maldives.
Closest to the airport (yet feels remote). Tennis academy, padel, and a kids' & teens' club that quietly defines the category.
Best for — Active families and groups travelling with teenagers who don't want to sit still.
Noonu Atoll
Velaa Private Island
A private-aviation owner's hideaway with a golf academy designed by José María Olazábal.
Possibly the highest staff-to-guest ratio in the country. The wine cellar, cigar room and tavaru tower are without equal.
Best for — Connoisseurs of wine, cigars and golf who expect their staff to remember them by name on arrival.
Raa Atoll
Joali Being
The Maldives' first dedicated wellbeing island.
Programmes built around four pillars — mind, skin, microbiome, energy — with consulting practitioners flown in from Europe.
Best for — Guests combining a retreat, a reset, or post-clinical recovery with a private-island stay.
North Malé Atoll
Patina Maldives, Fari Islands
Studio MK27 architecture and a marina village with Roberto's, Tiago and Beach Kabana.
The most design-led address in the country and the only Maldives resort with a true walkable F&B village.
Best for — Younger families and design-driven travellers who want a restaurant scene without leaving the atoll.
South Malé Atoll
Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi
Three islands, eleven restaurants, and the standalone Private Island residence.
Scale without compromise. The Private Island itself is one of the most requested buy-outs in the Indian Ocean.
Best for — Multi-family travel and group celebrations that want choice on tap.
When to go
Three Maldives, depending on the month.
December – April
Dry season. Glass-flat lagoons, the best underwater visibility and peak demand — book 9 to 12 months ahead for Christmas, New Year and February school break.
May – July
Green season. Short tropical squalls, dramatic skies, the surf swell arrives and rates soften. Often the smartest value-to-experience window.
August – November
Whale-shark and manta season in Baa Atoll. Variable weather but extraordinary marine encounters for divers and snorkellers.
